Clean sweep for Lowe's for the May Festival
Chester’s oldest jewellers Lowe & Sons has cleaned and engraved the Cups that will be presented at Chester Racecourse next week, continuing a relationship that has lasted for more than 200 years.
Lowe & Sons, of Bridge Street Row, continues to engrave the Chester Cup for the Racecourse; the major race of the premier May meeting, as well as polishing and engraving other major racing trophies such as the Chester Vase. Lowe & Sons, which was established in 1770, is one of the UK’s oldest jewellers and has combined with Chester Racecourse, the UK’s oldest racecourse.
Lowe & Sons will also be supplying tumbler cups based on designs from hundreds of years ago to the winning owners at next week’s Chester May meeting. Records dating back to 1791 show that tumbler cups made by Lowe & Sons were presented by the Earl of Grosvenor at Chester Races before trophies became fashionable.
The race title and date will be engraved by Lowe & Sons on the tumblers and this revived custom will continue for all Chester Racecourse meetings in the future.
General Manager of Lowe & Son’s Kevin Parry said:
“Lowe and Sons is delighted to have forged this strong relationship with Chester Racecourse, which has been established for more than 200 years. Lowe’s continue to engrave the trophies which will be sparkling for next week. We are proud of this strong link and pleased that once again, tumblers are being engraved with the race title and date. "
Silversmith’s Lowe’s first supplied the Chester Cup in 1804. Chester Racecourse is the oldest in Britain, with racing dating back to 1539; the last Gold Cup was presented in 1927, with the Cup now being Silver gilt.
