Top businesswoman goes back to school
The Queen"s School was delighted to welcome leading businesswoman and former pupil Dr Louise Makin as guest of honour at its annual prize giving.
In an entertaining speech Dr Makin, CEO of biotechnology firm BTG, spoke about her own career and how she took the top slot at BTG four years ago, building the pharmaceuticals company into one of the UK"s top 200 companies. BTG develops products to target critical care, cancer, neurological and other disorders.
In addition to her corporate responsibilities, Dr Makin enjoys a sporting challenge and this year she and her team won the gruelling Three Peaks yacht race – sailing the coast between Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, and running up the mountains at each stage.
In her address, Dr Makin used her own experience to highlight to the girls the importance of challenging themselves. She also underlined that gender had never been an issue in her career. “I don”t think of myself as a woman in business. I think of myself as an individual", she said.
The evening was an opportunity to recognise the hard work of the girls and their accomplishments throughout the year. Prizes for outstanding achievement at A Level were awarded to many of the school leavers, with Year 12 girls being commended for their excellent success at GCSE. Senior students were also presented with trophies and cups in recognition of their academic, musical and sporting accomplishments over the last 12 months.
Mrs Catherine Buckley, Headmistress of The Queen"s School, explained that Dr Makin was the ideal speaker for an evening that celebrates young women and their successes. “It is inspiring for our girls to hear a former pupil who has been so successful in a field which combines the worlds of business and science. I am delighted that we were able to welcome Dr Makin back to school to be guest of honour at our prize giving.”
