The appliance of science is extra sweet at Queen's
Over 70 budding young scientists took time out of their weekend earlier this month, in order to take part in this year’s Sweet Science event at The Queen’s School.
Year six girls from local schools gathered at The Queen’s School to spend their Saturday morning watching jelly babies explode, making ice cream and developing cola cannons.
Staff and volunteers from Q6, the sixth form centre at The Queen’s School, were on hand throughout the morning to help the girls and ensure that they had fun learning about Science in a less traditional way.
Mrs Fiona Costigan, Head of Chemistry at Queen’s, said:
“I was absolutely delighted at the number of girls who showed a keen interest in science. Everyone loved conducting the tasty experiments.”
Isabel Gelder, aged 10 from Chester, commented:
“I loved the ice-cream factory. The ice-cream was AMAZING! I also enjoyed doing the coke bottle experiment with the Mentos sweets. I loved watching the teacher doing his experiment with the Mentos because the bottle went really far – it even reached into a bin!”
Catriona Drew, aged 10 from Chester, added:
“My favourite part was exploding the jelly babies but I really would have liked exploding something myself!”
