Students in Dublin"s fair city
Twenty four sixth formers from The Queen"s School, together with their teachers, enjoyed a lively cultural weekend exploring the historic landmarks of Ireland"s capital city.
Following in the footsteps of literary figures such as Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver"s Travels, the students visited Trinity College and Dublin Castle, before admiring the collection of Irish and European painting at Ireland"s National Gallery. Also on their itinerary was the historic Kilmainham Jail where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held and executed.
Dublin, whose name comes from the Gaelic Dubh Linn, meaning black pool, is thought to have been originally settled on the site which is now occupied by the city"s Christ Church cathedral.
Said party leader, John O"Meara, “This was an opportunity for the girls to get a sense of the wealth of culture and literature that Dublin has to offer. We managed to cram a lot into one weekend, but I think that now their appetite has been whetted, the girls will be keen to return again to get to know the city better.”
