Queen's girls get arty
Girls studying art at The Queen’s School have been to view art galleries in both Manchester and London to help them with their course work.
Pupils had the chance to view some exciting exhibitions; GSCE students travelled to Manchester to view works at The Whitworth Art Gallery and The Lowry, whereas A Level students travelled a little further afield to view works at the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain.
At The Whitworth Art Gallery pupils got to see exhibitions from contemporary artists who work with shadow, light and technology. Students were also able to take part in a tour of the exhibition delivered by art history students from Manchester University. The Lowry which they visited later in the day provided contextual information on L.S Lowry who they have been studying already at school.
Those who visited the Tate galleries were able to view exhibitions of works by John Martin and Barry Flanagan. Pupils were especially excited by the opportunity to view Martin’s ‘Last Judgement Triptych’ completed in 1853, something which had been much discussed in class.
17-year-old Anna Tweed commented:
“It was impossible to avoid becoming fully absorbed by Martin’s pieces. Standing in front of them, they were breathtaking and had magnificence and a fortitude that consumed the viewer.”
Mrs Louisa Poole, art teacher at The Queen’s School, explained:
“The trips were an ideal opportunity for students to gather information to inform their own art practice. Although we have excellent access to images and information about artwork through books and the internet, there is no substitute for experiencing a piece of art first hand.”
