Queen's girls enjoy a taste of Spain
Spanish students from The Queen’s School, Chester, have enjoyed an action-packed holiday in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Barcelona was the destination of choice, and the Queen’s girls got plenty of opportunity to practise their language skills as they explored one of Spain’s cultural jewels.
The group of 25 girls from years 8 and 9, accompanied by three of the school’s Spanish teachers, saw stunning sights across the city – from famous sporting venues to renowned art creations.
The group had the opportunity to visit Neu Camp, Barcelona’s impressive football stadium, where they saw international football icons, including Messi, take part in training sessions.
The students went on to tour the city and enjoy the colourful architecture, visiting the immense cathedral originally designed by the celebrated Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The building of the Sagrada Família started in 1882 and it is still under construction to this day. The girls also enjoyed other highly individualistic Art Nouveau buildings by Gaudí. The unusual urban housing creation called La Casa Mila has such a unique organic feel that local people christened it La Pedrera, meaning quarry. Today the building is one of the most important museums in Barcelona, housing Renaissance drawings and a collection of modern art paintings.
There was plenty of opportunity to spend their euros as the girls explored the famous ‘Ramblas’ and had their picture taken with some of the photogenic street theatre performers. The girls also visited the Torres vineyards, one of the most famous in Spain, and sampled some of its non-alcoholic products.
Stéphanie Racapé, Spanish tutor and trip organiser, said: “The girls were a credit to the school. It was very rewarding to see them practise their Spanish in shops and to see the excitement they got out of the whole experience.”
Although it was a busy schedule, the group did have chance to relax. They reenergized with evening swims and also had the chance to learn some salsa dance moves in a special Latino dance evening.
13 year-old Alex McNee said: “It was a really wonderful trip. We saw some amazing places and ate delicious food. The ice-cream was fantastic.”
Year 8 pupil, Millie Tunstall, added: “The trip really gave us an insight in Spanish culture and my Spanish has really improved with all the practice.”
