Queen's girls demonstrate their maths magic
A team of maths wizards from The Queen’s School, Chester, proved they could work magic with numbers by taking the top prize out of 40 schools at The University of Chester’s Mathamagic competition.
Competitors from across the North West spent the whole day number crunching. The morning saw them enjoying non-competitive maths activities before taking on each other in the afternoon’s team challenge. To win, the Queen’s girls had to solve a series of maths problems as a team.
The four Year 6 pupils, aged 10 and 11, were Amy Clarkson, Isabel Millican, Emily Bolwell and Abigail Lahvis. They performed so well on the day that, not only did they win in their age group, but they were just one point off the score of the Year 7 champions.
Katy Morris, Year 6 teacher, said: “The girls worked very well as a team and used their mathematical skills to solve a variety of challenging problems.”
Young student, Isabel Millican, added: “It was really exciting competing against other schools. We had to think really hard and share ideas so we felt really proud accepting our first place certificates.”
The competition success is a reflection of the excellent SATS scores achieved in 2008 when the school gained Level 5 scores of 100% in English, 91% in science and 82% in maths.
