Queen's girl talks the talk
A 12-year-old Queen’s School girl has reached the final of a national Mandarin speaking competition after competing in regional heats in London.
Stella Kiselyova from Ellesmere Port, entered the HSBC British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition with school friend Sian Davies, 14, at the London School of Economics along with about 200 other competitors from nearly 40 schools.
The girls had to complete a series of tasks, including a pre-prepared speech, sentence translations from English to Mandarin and a set of questions both asked and answered in Mandarin. The girls also needed to be able to comment on Chinese culture.
Stella’s performance won her a place in the national final of the competition which will take place in London at the British Museum in February.
Stella said: “It was a very exciting experience and was really fun to do! I enjoy studying Mandarin at school.”
The competition is now in its ninth year and promoted the teaching of Mandarin as a modent language in UK schools. The winner of the final will receive a trip to China.
