Literary ladies
A team of bookworms from The Queen’s School has won this year’s Cheshire Inter-School Book Quiz with the highest score seen by judges in the 30 year history of the competition.
Guided and encouraged by the school’s head librarian, Gilly Mayes, year 8 students Isabelle Ardon, Rhiannon Jones and Mareen Zachariah of Chester and Fiona Stockton of Frodsham had to work their way through six tough rounds, involving twenty seven schools, in order to reach the final. The four schools which made the final, which was held at the St.Mary’s Centre, Chester, were The Queen’s School, Eaton Bank School, of Congleton, Birchwood Community High School, of Warrington, and Hartford High School, of Hartford near Northwich.
Six book titles were given to the schools by the organisers of the competition. In the final the Queen’s team faced a series of demanding questions, which tested their response to a number of designated titles as well as their general literary knowledge.
Gilly Mayes said:
“The girls worked hard to achieve their place in the final, giving up their time to read the books and to answer the questions in each round. We did practice a lot over break and dinner times which obviously paid off! I’m delighted that they did so well, as the competition has increased and encouraged their reading and inspired their peers. Taking part has been a real pleasure and ultimately very rewarding.”
Popular author Cliff McNish presented the delighted winners with their cup.
“It was a very exciting final,” added Isabelle Ardron. “We were really happy to win.”

The Queen’s School, Chester, Cheshire is one of the country’s leading independent schools offering the highest standard of education for girls from ages 4 – 18.
It’s conclusive. Research by the Good Schools Guide has proved what many parents have long recognised – that girls do better when they are educated in all girls’ schools.
Girls learn differently from boys. At The Queen’s School we recognise this and provide an education which is geared specifically to the needs of girls. We create a learning environment where girls are happy to take intellectual risks and where they have the space and security to develop their self-esteem and confidence. The academic benefits are underlined every year by the outstanding results achieved in SATs, GCSE, A level and Oxbridge entrance. The school provides the best possible environment for girls to fulfil their academic potential.
But academic success is only one aspect of life at Queen’s. We offer a huge range of extra-curricular activities so that each individual can explore her abilities and interests, develop leadership skills and experience new challenges. Sport, drama, music, outward-bound activities and oversees adventures all contribute to educating the whole person.
Strong pastoral care combined with a national reputation for excellence means that a Queen’s School education is arguably the best investment you can make in your daughter’s future.
We provide financial help up to full fees, depending on parental income.
