Golden girl leads from the front
Queen"s School sixth former, Libby Anderson, has made history by becoming the first ever female Cadet Company Sergeant Major in the King"s and Queen"s Combined Cadet Force. Five years after she joined the contingent, Libby will now lead the Army Section of the CCF- the first time that a young woman has held that position in the more than 20 year existence of the schools" cadet force.
Libby demonstrated her outstanding leadership potential from the outset. By 2006 she was commanding the contingent team which won a military skills competition and she then captained the shooting team for their debut at the Inter Schools Target Rifle Meet at Bisley. Following these successes, she was awarded the prestigious Wignall Salver for Service to the CCF at the Contingent Annual Dinner. A year later she led the Senior Girls" orienteering team to a gold at the National Cadet Orienteering Championships.
Libby, who hopes to study English and philosophy at university, juggles her responsibilities as CSM with preparing for her A levels, playing the cello and playing lacrosse for Queen"s and for Cheshire Metros. She is also in the final stages of selection for the Duke of Westminster Award – a national competition open to cadets who are enrolled in the BTEC programme. CCF played a major role in Libby’s Duke of Edinburgh gold award; she will be presented with her certificate at St James’s Palace in March.
Queen"s School headmistress Catherine Buckley said: “Libby is an impressive young woman by any standards. Her contribution to the life of The Queen”s School is outstanding and it is a pleasure to see her success in a field which has remained male-dominated until now."
