A notable experience
Budding young composers at The Queen’s School have given a live performance of their work to an appreciative audience of parents and friends at the school’s first Composition Evening.
The girls are all members of the school’s Composition Club where students are encouraged to express themselves musically in a range of styles ranging from pop and folk to more classically influenced pieces. Girls from years 7 to 11 meet weekly to share their ideas and to work on composing and orchestrating their music.
The Queen’s School Composition Club is led by music teacher Mrs Jeanette Healey, herself a well-known local composer. Mrs Healey holds a first class degree in music and has specialised in composition, writing a number of songs for children’s musicals and composing pieces to be sung in Chester Cathedral by the school’s Chamber Choir. Under her guidance, pupils at Queen’s have been keen to explore different idioms and to cooperate in helping to perform each other’s work.
The Composition Evening ended with a live performance of ‘Masquerade’, an upbeat piece for flute and oboe which included contributions from 9 different girls.Mrs Healey commented: “The evening was a huge success and it was fantastic to hear so many original compositions of such a high standard. The girls were a pleasure to work with and have so much talent. I look forward to hearing more in the future”
Year10 student Áine Jackson added: “It was a great opportunity to perform in front of an audience and get feedback on my composition.” Gina Bolwell of year 9 added: “It was really good to show my family what I had been doing. It was great to perform with my friends, especially as it was something we had written ourselves.”

The Queen’s School, Chester, Cheshire is one of the country’s leading independent schools offering the highest standard of education for girls from ages 4 – 18.
It’s conclusive. Research by the Good Schools Guide has proved what many parents have long recognised – that girls do better when they are educated in all girls’ schools.
Girls learn differently from boys. At The Queen’s School we recognise this and provide an education which is geared specifically to the needs of girls. We create a learning environment where girls are happy to take intellectual risks and where they have the space and security to develop their self-esteem and confidence. The academic benefits are underlined every year by the outstanding results achieved in SATs, GCSE, A level and Oxbridge entrance. The school provides the best possible environment for girls to fulfil their academic potential.
But academic success is only one aspect of life at Queen’s. We offer a huge range of extra-curricular activities so that each individual can explore her abilities and interests, develop leadership skills and experience new challenges. Sport, drama, music, outward-bound activities and oversees adventures all contribute to educating the whole person.
Strong pastoral care combined with a national reputation for excellence means that a Queen’s School education is arguably the best investment you can make in your daughter’s future.
We provide financial help up to full fees, depending on parental income.
