Kili climb raises more than £55,000 for charity
A PUB owner from Chester has cut back on the pints to climb the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, helping to raise more than £55,000 for charity.
Ian Wade, owner of Modern British Taverns, has been in training for the last few months before embarking on a gruelling eight day high-altitude climb of Kilimanjaro to raise money for Christleton based charity Children Today.
Nineteen went on the African challenge, which is the first time Children Today; who also organise treks to Peru and Costa Rica, has held the Kilimanjaro challenge, collectively raising more than £55,000.
Ian, owner of The Ring O’Bells in Christleton, who saw monkeys and mongooses during his challenge, said:
“This was a tough challenge, raising money for a great cause. There was real team spirit; with some suffering from altitude sickness we all pushed each other on. The 19 attendees are meeting up at The Ring O’Bells in January.”
Head of Fundraising at Children Today, Ruth Thompson, added:
“This is an amazing achievement from everybody who took part, raising a huge amount of money which will fund equipment for children with disabilities.”
Kilimanjaro in north-eastern Tanzania is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,893 metres above sea-level and the fourth largest mountain in the world.
Children Today are planning another trip to Kilimanjaro in March 2011. For more information email: ruth@childrentoday.org.uk or call 01244 335622.
