Football 'vets' and under 7s get kitted out
Former football stars from a village in Chester, who combine their passion for the beautiful game with their enjoyment of after match celebrations, have unveiled their new kit.
The team, which includes former schoolboy internationals and semi-professional players, have received the new kit which is sponsored by The Ring O’Bells in Christleton. As well as supporting the veterans, The Ring O’Bells also sponsors AFC Waverton under-sevens, who are unbeaten so far this season.
The all-star veterans compete for the Mitch Baines Cup, which is a football tournament held annually in honour of former Christleton veteran team player Mitch who died of Leukemia. By competing for the Cup and by holding a curry and disco night at the Ring O’ Bells, £620 was raised by the team for Leukemia research.
The veterans play every Thursday at the County Offices Club, Upton. Cliff Mallows, whose son Sam is Assistant Manager at The Ring O’Bells, founded the team in 1996. Team members include rock legends from The Moo Cows, whose recording studio is based in Christleton.
Ian Wade, owner of The Ring O’Bells, said:
“We are really pleased to support the community in Christleton and to sponsor a local football team, especially a team that raises money for charity.”
Simon Mageean, former Tranmere Rovers youth team and regular veteran player, added:
“Team members are from all walks of life but they are interested in keeping football playing alive in their senior years. The team is centred on Christleton but players travel from as far as Ruthin and Heswall. Our new shirts are the same colour as Brazil’s away kit and although I wouldn’t describe our skill on the pitch as in any way Brazilian, we have some county school champions playing every week.”
