Seven candles and a mystery with clues
Representatives from Marketing PRojects and Hargreaves and Woods, the two founder organisations of Novus Young Professionals networking group blew out the seven candles on the birthday cake for Novus last week.
Novus was celebrating its seventh anniversary in style with afternoon tea at Katie’s Tea Room in Watergate Street, Chester and a speech from Colin Potts of Destination Focus about Chester, followed by wine tasting over the road at Corks Out for advice on “Christmas dinner best wines”.
The event held last Friday saw more than 20 attendees representing Chester based Companies meet other young professionals and hear Colin Potts speak about “Making Chester a Must-See European City”. Colin has a long and distinguished career in tourism latterly in Chester and including a leading role at Chester Renaissance. He spoke of the five keys facts about the Chester tourism economy, what being a must-see European city means and what needs to be achieved. Attendees raised numbers of questions and ideas during the Q&A session which was especially extended to 40 minutes.
Attention moved further afield to sunnier climes when five selected wines were discussed and tasted at Corks Out in Watergate Street after the tea. Each wine had been chosen from around the world for a Christmas dinner celebration by Tom Scargil, assistant manager. Attendees were asked to price the wines and then their value revealed from amongst the extensive selection at Corks Out.
Amy Pownall of Hillyer McKeown attending Novus for the first time said:
“I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the event on Friday evening. It was my first “Novus” event, and I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly everyone was. I found the talk by Colin Potts very interesting, and as commented on the night, it was nice to hear people talking about Chester in a positive light rather than the usual negative one. The wine tasting was really good fun, and a great way to finish the formal part of the evening."

Notes to editors: Novus was conceived to provide a channel for young people to experience the benefits of building and developing networking skills. The networking group held its inaugural event in November 2002. The inspiration for Novus came from a realization that although there were plenty of organisations aimed at networking already present in Chester, there was a distinct lack of ‘young’ professionals attending. Novus helps those who are at the beginning of their professional careers, in need of support and valuable contacts, to help ‘fast forward’ their careers.
Novus also enables young professionals to hear from invited guests with successful careers and learn from their business experiences and expertise. This both inspires and enables their own personal and business development.
Most importantly, Novus concentrates on making any event relaxed and sociable where young professionals can chill out and be themselves. Events typically attract 40 attendees. Members attend events held every two months on a Friday.
Membership of Novus is limited to 500 and is free. However, it is by recommendation and referral only. Each event is designed by organizers Marketing Projects to break even. Speakers are leading luminaries from business who generously share secrets of their success with Novus.
The last event was held at Oddfellows with a speech and ‘Q&A’ session from Jay Williams (Director at JWPR, Creative director at 72 point PR, chief reporter at SWNS…) as guest speaker.
