Waterbird Jumps Ship to Stay on Dry Land

A discerning moorhen has jumped ship to take up five-star residence at a canalside hotel in Chester.

‘Milly’ the moorhen, as she has been christened by staff at The Mill Hotel and Spa Destination, had built her nest and hatched eggs on the Hotel’s Restaurant Cruiser.

The moorhen left her nest when the Cruiser departed daily to sail along the Shropshire Union Canal for lunch, afternoon teas and dinner voyages. Milly, who is clearly not keen on cruising, hopped back on her nest when the boat returned to the Milton Street based hotel.

The Hotel staff have looked on this with some amusement. Captain “Bargee” Bill Bradley has been keeping his eye on proceedings and the staff decided to carefully move the nest to a quiet flower-box outside the Canaletto Restaurant Window, so that the mother moorhen can be with her chicks at all times.

Gordon Vickers, Managing Director of The Mill Hotel & Spa Destination, said:

“Nature is a wonderful thing. Each year we look forward to either the moorhens or ducks nesting on our towpath, but this is the first time that we have had nesting on the Restaurant Cruiser. The staff are unofficial wardens and have enjoyed the experience. Milly is now very happy where she has been moved to and is watching the Cruiser coming and going, probably thinking why did I not nest here in the first place! It’s bizarre that Milly is the only one that doesn’t like sailing on the boat.”

Situated on an historic Roman site in the middle of the City of Chester, the Mill Hotel and Spa Destination was opened by its present owners in 1987. The original Griffiths Cornmill building dates from 1830 and great care has been taken to sympathetically incorporate many of the original architectural features during the conversion into a hotel.

The Mill has been extended in recent years with the addition of the impressive south wing, linked to the original building via a glass walled bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal reminiscent of the City of Venice.

The hotel can rightly say it is Chester’s complete hotel and leisure destination with 129 en-suite bedrooms, Free Wi FI Internet, extensive dining and restaurant options, conferencing facilities, and unrivalled leisure facilities including Beauty Spa, Nail Bar, Hair Salon and unrivalled leisure facilities including a Technogym Gymnasium, Kinesis Studio, Pool, Sauna and Steam Room. It has the highest occupancy figures of any Chester hotel.

Dining options include the Canaletto and the Flambé Steak restaurants, the Restaurant Cruiser, Peppermill Trattoria and Real Ale Bar and Deli Counter.
