Barack Obama, Jamie Oliver and the Mill Hotel & Spa Destination
American President Barack Obama and counterparts including Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, dined with Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street during the G20 summit. The menu, prepared by TV chef Jamie Oliver, will be familiar to visitors to Chester’s Mill Hotel Destination & Spa.
Gordon Brown may have been lambasted for his handling of the financial crisis, but Gordon Vickers has received nothing but praise for the lamb served at the Mill Hotel Spa & Destination. Entrepreneur and gourmand, Vickers sources the free range lamb served at his Chester hotel from the family run hill farms of Elwy Valley, Denbighshire, in the heart of North Wales – the same lamb chosen by Jamie Oliver to showcase the best of British produce at Downing Street.
While no-one predicted the stock market crash, sub prime lamb was never an option for Gordon, who personally selected Elwy Valley produce in 2005. The lamb has proved a firm (and juicy) favourite in the Canaletto Restaurant, on the Restaurant Cruiser and in the Real Ale Bar at The Mill Hotel Spa & Destination.
Vickers said:
“We only select the best local, fresh produce for diners at the Mill. This is top quality lamb, traditionally reared and it easily earns my and the chef’s seal of approval. More importantly our guests enjoy it and can see and taste the difference. Some others in Downing Street seem to like it too.”

Situated on an historic Roman site in the middle of the City of Chester, the Mill Hotel and Spa Destination was opened by its present owners in 1987. The original Griffiths Cornmill building dates from 1830 and great care has been taken to sympathetically incorporate many of the original architectural features during the conversion into a hotel.
The Mill has been extended in recent years with the addition of the impressive south wing, linked to the original building via a glass walled bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal reminiscent of the City of Venice.
The hotel can rightly say it is Chester’s complete hotel and leisure destination with 129 en-suite bedrooms, Free Wi FI Internet, extensive dining and restaurant options, conferencing facilities, and unrivalled leisure facilities including Beauty Spa, Nail Bar, Hair Salon and unrivalled leisure facilities including a Technogym Gymnasium, Kinesis Studio, Pool, Sauna and Steam Room. It has the highest occupancy figures of any Chester hotel.
Dining options include the Canaletto and the Flambé Steak restaurants, the Restaurant Cruiser, Peppermill Trattoria and Real Ale Bar and Deli Counter.
