Free Range Super Chefs adopted by 'Eggsellent' Cucina
Gordon Ramsey, Heston Blumenthal, Jean Christophe Novelli and Nigella Lawson are among the 30 top chefs whose names have been given to hens adopted by Cucina across all of its restaurants within schools.
Catering experts Cucina, who are serving fresh food to more than 20,000 pupils up and down the country, has sponsored the hens as part of an initiative from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust. Cucina has also won a silver Eggsellence Award from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, which promotes the best possible living conditions for hens, because all of Cucina’s eggs and egg-based products are free range.
The chefs were chosen specifically for each of Cucina’s restaurants, such as Marco Pierre White for Marlborough School Science College in St.Albans and Michael Caines for Flixton Girls’ High School in Manchester, with the Michael Caines Restaurant at Abode Manchester.
Cucina’s own Executive Head Chef Ian Morgan, who helped Gary Rhodes open Rhodes & Co and was Head Chef at the Hotel Felix in Cambridge, is the name of the hen adopted by Abbey Meadows Primary School in Cambridgeshire.
Steve Quinn, Managing Director of Cucina, said:
“These are great initiatives from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust. We are pleased to be supporting free range farmers and winning the Eggsellence Award shows our commitment to using only free-range eggs. Naming the hens after top chefs really brings food to life for the pupils; the chickens we have adopted were formerly battery hens and rely on sponsorship from companies such as Cucina to pay for hens to live in better conditions.”
The Battery Hen Welfare Trust, which has Jamie Oliver, Amanda Holden and Antony Worrall Thompson among its patrons, became the UK’s first registered charity for laying hens in April 2005 and was established in order to raise awareness of the 18 million hens currently kept in cages in the UK.
