Banned In Chester Music Festival
New festival opening in June to promote the best of UK songwriters
Fans of exciting new music, take note: Starting on June 16th, the city of Chester will be playing host to some of the UK’s most exciting original acts. Over four nights, Joe Gideon & The Shark, Jon Byrne, Pulled Apart By Horses, Lucy & The Caterpillar and many more, will be wowing audiences with an eclectic range of musical styles, from folk, blues, punk, acoustic, jazz to name but a few.
The festival is the brainchild of Luke Oldale, a musician from North Wales. A passionate supporter of original music, Luke wanted to put on an event that he hoped would promote the craft of songwriting.
With the support of ChestertheGiantCity, he gathered some of the most exciting song writers and performers he could find, and put them together under a single banner: Banned in Chester. Each band was chosen, not only because they were playing original music, but were doing it in a fresh and unique way. Here was a crop of immensely talented acts who were ploughing their own furrow, and were all the more exciting for it.
It is hoped that this event will go on to become THE place for both aspiring and established song writers to come and be counted; and where fans of original music can come and be dazzled.
On June 16th, Telford’s Warehouse will play host to three bands, playing a wide range of roots styles: Depot; Deuces Wild; Bullfrog Soup. Tickets £4
Then, between June 17th-19th, the Frog & Nightingale will be hosting the following:
17th – punk/experimental night – Pulled Apart By Horses; Atomic Suplex; Face of Christ; Cleopatra Cage. Tickets £4
18th – acoustic songwriters – Lucy & The Caterpillar; Virginia MacNaughton; The Invisible Wires; Luke Oldale. Tickets £5
19th – festival headliners – Joe Gideon & The Shark; Jon Byrne; Foxes!; Duke Garwood. Tickets £10.
“I am really excited at the spread of acts for this first festival,” says Luke. “Fans of Nick Cave and Seasick Steve will already know Joe Gideon & The Shark, having just supported both on recent tours. And acts such as Pulled Apart, Lucy, Jon Byrne, Virginia MacNaughton, Depot – they’re all receiving rave reviews of their music; its fantastic to have them all playing under one banner!”
Kristine Szulik from ChestertheGiantCity added;
“ChestertheGiantCity is always keen to support great new talent and this is an ideal opportunity for us to do just that!”

Chester is unique in that it has a Family of Giants and a tradition of giant-making that can be traced back through Guild records to the 14th Century.
Chester’s modern Family of Giants started life when Dave Roberts came across ‘Nathandriel’, A Giant that was on a visit from Huddersfield to Chester. Nathandriel’s maker (and author of Medieval Dancing Giants Lee Gilbert, had brought Nathandriel on a pilgrimage to Chester. In Medieval times Chester had been the Mecca for giant-building and possessed the only known Family of Giants in the country. Giants were walking the streets of Chester in the late 1400s until the puritanical reign of Oliver Cromwell in the mid 1660s.
Dave Roberts was so inspired by the notion that Giants had been such an important activity in Chester he decided to reintroduce the building of Giants into Chester as a creative way in which to encourage young people in Lache and Blacon to gain an insight into their culture and heritage.
In Midsummer 1989 a male giant (still used in the Midsummer Watch today), and the Father of Chester’s current Family of Giants, became the first giant to walk through the streets of Chester for over 300 years.
In Midsummer 2009 Chester will celebrate not only the 20th Anniversary of Chester’s modern Family of Giants but also the beginning of “ChestertheGiantCity” thus creating a link between Chester’s past, present and future.
ChestertheGiantCity is a Community Interest Company that has been created to unite the Private, Public and Third Sector around the physical and metaphorical concept of giants.
