Performers illuminate the City Walls at twilight
Organisers of “Up The Wall”, a performance art event which took place on and around the City Walls, estimated that more than 1,800 people saw the diverse performance and installation art works presented along the route.
This is the second year that Chester Performs has staged “Up The Wall”; a celebration of the City"s history and architecture in light, sound and art. This year, 35 artists and performers took part in the three day event which featured work at new venues including on the city wall, in the Chester Cathedral cloisters, along St.Werburgh Street and around Abbey Square.
Save the Family, who created A World of Wool, performed their woolly songs on St.Werburgh Street and world-renowned artists SDNA created a new piece of work specially for the event which was projected onto a building in Abbey Square. Chester artist Russell Kirk produced a range of insect light sculptures which lit up the route.
Amber Knipe, Chester Performs Project Coordinator, said:
“This was a tremendous event which really drew people”s imagination, despite the terrible weather on the first night. It was so special because Chester at night is a magical place. With art and light adding to the magic we all saw the city wall and cathedral walls, some of the City"s most famous features, in an entirely different light. Whilst it was certainly a family friendly event, promenaders were treated to some quite unusual and unexpected treats. We are hoping to develop the event in future years, making it a must see date in everyone"s diaries for many more years to follow."
Other artists included Toneflote, a mutant musical milkfloat, Jacqueline McCormick from Cheshire Dance, musical collective Frakture from Liverpool and Chester"s very own VJ Germ, Gemma Briers, who presented an interactive video installation in the Cathedral.
