Hat-trick of wins for Best Banger
Judges decided the overall winner of Chester’s Best Sausage was, for the third year running, David Joinson, who won with his pork and apple sausage. Mr Joinson, whose sausages are on show at Chester Market, took the crown, following on from his pork and blue Cheshire cheese sausage last year and his pork and leek winner in 2007.
Chester Market picked up the best sausage at the Food and Drink Festival for the fourth year running.
Bruce Edge, of Ernest W Edge & Son Butchers Handbridge, was judged second, with his traditional Cheshire pork sausage and Chris Austin, of Austin’s Butchers, Northgate Street, Chester came third with his ‘Chester sausage’, which is made within the city walls and consists of Cheshire pork, parsley, herbs and crushed walnuts.
All three winning sausages will be at the Taste Festival at Chester Racecourse, as part of the Chester Food and Drink Festival, where the sausages can be sampled from 2pm to 3pm on Easter Day, Sunday April 12.
David Joinson said:
“I am delighted to have won this prestigious Award three years on the run. It has been difficult to get the right amount of apple for this sausage, but after 12 months of testing we now have the perfect apple content.”
Judges said:
“David Joinson’s pork and apple sausages are outstanding. His sausages are a fantastic blend of local produce and provided exceptional taste, texture and appearance.”
The Chester Food & Drink Festival is taking place from April 4 to April 18 and will include many activities and events such as the very popular Cocktail Competition at Cruise nightclub, St. John Street, Chester, where the city’s finest bartenders will reveal their latest creations.
Also helping to bring the tastes and smells of the Festival to the city centre, a series of theme nights, special family offers and accommodation promotions in city centre restaurants and hotels will all help to make Chester the focus of food and drink within the UK.

SAUSAGE Notes
The first week in November is British Sausage Week. The world record for sausage eating is held by a Japanese man, who ate 58 sausages in 10 minutes.
Of the 5 million people a day and 90% of households eating sausages around Britain 20,000 of them are expected at Chester Food & Drink Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend. More sausages are eaten on Saturday than any other day of the week, 44% for an evening meal rather than 18% for breakfast. The British public spend 600 million UK pounds on 266,500 tonnes of sausages a year of which there are 470 different types.
Sausages made of pork, flavoured with fennel and coriander and pushed into a sheep’s bladder, date back to the Roman era and were very probably eaten in Chester two thousand years ago.
