Hard Goat's Cheese wins Best Cheese
Allerdale goat’s cheese was crowned best cheese at this year’s Taste Festival as Thornby Moor Dairy in Cumbria swept the board with four winners out of the six categories.
The Finalist cheeses, which were shortlisted from more than 30 cheeses, included:
Hard cow’s cheese – won by the Crofton cheese, Thornby Moor Dairy
Blue cheese – blue winnow, made by Thornby Moor Dairy
Cheshire cheese – won by John Bourne of Malpas
Soft cheese – won by Thornby Moor Dairy
Hard goat’s cheese – won by Allerdale goat cheese from Thornby Moor Dairy
Smoked cheese – smoked Crabtree, made by Anne Connolly, of Larkton Hall Farm, Malpas.
The four judges, who were examining the cheeses on appearance, texture, taste, aroma and colour, included one cheese lover, two cheesemongers and a member of the British Airways catering team.
Nick Birchall, of The Cheese Shop in Northgate Street, Chester, said:
“The Allerdale goat cheese was clean, fresh, cut beautifully and tasted wonderfully. The texture was second to none – it was a text book cheese. This really was a worthy winner.”
