You're hired! CDHT creates opportunities for Apprentices
Whereas Sir Alan Sugar gets to take on only one apprentice, a further two apprentices a year are learning on the job at Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT).
With many organisations cutting their numbers of apprentices or simply not recruiting, CDHT are looking to recruit two further apprentice electricians who will start work in September alongside the 13 existing apprentices within TrustWorks, CDHT’s in-house Repairs & Maintenance provider.
Apprentices assist CDHT maintenance technicians with repairs and major works for up to four years and the apprenticeships include training to National Vocational Qualification level in their chosen trade and also multi-skill training.
The majority become part of the permanent workforce with an excellent chance of becoming a permanent employee after the 3-4 year apprenticeship. CDHT’s recruitment drive is based on TrustWorks’ 5-year business plan, ensuring that their skills are matched with work streams that come on line when they are due to graduate into skilled Technicians.
The Electrical Team is projected within the business plan as one of the biggest areas of external growth for TrustWorks, adding to the sustainability of the jobs and apprentice scheme.
John Denny, Chief Executive of CDHT, said:
“This is an economic climate when skills training for young people should be reinforced not cut. The highest proportion of unemployment is in the 18 to 24 age group; we have to support the apprentice initiative. These apprenticeships illustrate CDHT’s continued commitment to investing in training and employment and creating opportunities for local people.”
Richard Dymond, a CDHT apprentice, has worked as a plumber for CDHT for the last four years. Richard, 22, who was taken on as a permanent plumber as part of CDHT’s refurbishment team, added:
“CDHT is a great place to work. I was really pleased to get this apprenticeship, as 40 applied for five places. An apprenticeship with a company such as CDHT doesn’t come up all the time; you have to grab it. CDHT treat you well and give you good experience.”
Apprentices should be educated to a minimum standard of GCSE Grade C in Maths, English and Science or equivalent and must be aged under 21, due to funding availability.
