Two Green thumbs up for Double Garden Competition winner
The winners of Chester & District Housing Trust’s (CDHT) Garden Competition 2009 have been announced at a packed awards ceremony at the Trust’s base at Centurion House, Northgate Street.
More than 100 residents entered the Trust’s Garden Competition with first, second and third prizes awarded to winners in each of CDHT’s six neighbourhoods. The overall winner for the second consecutive year was Evelyn Jackson, of Stamford Road, Blacon, who was awarded £100 and a Scandinavian rose-bowl glass trophy to be kept for a year, which was donated by CDHT contractor Seddons. Evelyn has won the Blacon North category for the last three years. Overall second prize and £50 went to Doreen and Michael Bride, of Cliveden Road, Lache and a Special Award and £25 was presented to Arthur Atkins of Springfields, Mickle Trafford. Judges of the Awards were CDHT Resident Inspectors including Gus Cairns, Maureen Clarke-Tilston, Nora Coote, Pat Jones, Peter Newman, Helen Noble and Barbara Owen.
The Best Young Gardener Award and £25 was presented to Lydia Jackson, aged six, of Stamford Road, Blacon. Alan Thrasher, of Kingsway, won the Best Terraced Garden, Jean Warby, of Thackery Towers, won the Best Window Box and Helen Noble, on behalf of residents of Leyfield Court, Lache, won the Best Sheltered Scheme.
Best Newcomer was awarded to Wendy Bate and Graham Green, of Cliveden Road, Lache, with Best Vegetable Garden awarded to Jean and Barry Ravenscroft, of Rutland Place. Best Group of Gardens was won by Peter Eyton, of Shelley Road, Blacon and Amanda Heritage, of Darlington Crescent, Saughall, won Best Rural Garden.
Organiser Sara Morley, of CDHT Neighbourhood Services Manager, said:
“Thanks to everyone who took part in the garden competition. We are pleased to get so many entrants this year. The competition is really blossoming and we were lucky to be able to see so many beautiful gardens. There is a growing passion for gardening amongst our residents and with Evelyn winning the best garden competition two years on the run, Evelyn’s garden is definitely the one to beat.”

Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) was created in November 2000 to acquire the housing stock of Chester District Council and now owns and manages over 6,200 properties in and around Chester, employing 275 staff. The Trust’s homes fall in to six neighbourhoods – Blacon North; Blacon South; Chester City Area; The Rurals; Lache and Handbridge; Upton, Hoole, Newton and Plas Newton.
CDHT provides a range of services to tenants and residents in Chester and surrounding areas. These include ChesterCare, a community alarm service for CDHT tenants, other association tenants and private customers and also the specially designated Community Intervention Budget. This improves facilities and allows changes which are felt buy tenants to be vital to their community. CDHT also manages the housing waiting list and homelessness agency service on behalf of Chester City Council.
Current projects for CDHT include the £12million regeneration of the Treborth Road area of Chester to include 200 new homes for rent, sale and shared ownership, as well as a village green and wildlife habitats.
