60's High rises regenerated for the 21st century
Hundreds of residents at six high rises across Chester will have their fuel bills cut with the installation of new high performance renewable energy rendering which forms part of a £6m energy efficiency regeneration project.
Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) has started phase one of its work at the twelve-storey high rise blocks in Blacon which are receiving a render system to improve thermal performance, improved balconies and new entrances with canopies. Residents at the 216 apartments at Glyn Garth, Nant Peris and Plas Dinas are also benefiting from refurbished communal areas and external landscape improvements.
Residents at the 180 apartments at St Oswald’s, St George’s and St Anne’s high rises in Chester city centre will be consulted on phase two of the regeneration project. Proposals include external high tech rendering, improved balconies and improved communal areas and public realm.
The project has been made possible by CDHT committing £4m to the regeneration project as well as securing millions of pounds worth of investment from the European Regional Development Fund in partnership with Cheshire West & Chester Council and British Gas.
David Soothill, CDHT Assistant Director – Asset Management & Development, said:
“CDHT have an excellent track record of securing grant funding to bring external investment in to Cheshire and we are delighted to have worked with Cheshire West & Chester Council on this project. This investment is part of our ongoing commitment to improve our housing stock and make our communities more sustainable. The rendering will significantly enhance the thermal performance of the building, which will help to cut bills. With fuel prices rising, this will help reduce fuel poverty for our residents. Another important factor is that both phases will have a beneficial impact on the city of Chester as both sites are located in gateway entrances to the city.”
