Queen's Eco-Angels commit to a greener future
The resourceful young pupils at The Queen’s Lower School, Chester, have been showing their eco-friendly side by introducing a number of initiatives to address climate change.
Their commitment to protecting the future of the planet has now been recognised with the award of Bronze Eco Status from Eco-Schools.
The Eco-Schools programme encourages schools to become more sustainable and, by following its programme, Queen’s is reducing its environmental impact.
Achieving Bronze Level Status means that pupils at the school are learning how to become more effective citizens and take responsibility for the future of their own environment.
Not only have the girls introduced energy saving initiatives such as paper recycling across the whole school and a save electricity campaign, they are now also planning to set up a composting scheme to recycle the food waste from the kitchen.
The play area for the Queen’s infants is being redeveloped with new bedding areas to attract more wildlife and the addition of large log piles to encourage lots of mini-beasts, from beetles to butterflies.
The school secretary is also onboard and is now ensuring that all the office supplies are sourced from environmentally friendly companies.
Head teacher of Queen’s Lower School, Mrs Felicity Taylor, is delighted with the girls’ eco actions. She said: “As a school we are committed to playing our part in addressing climate change and reducing the environmental impact of the school’s activities.
She continued: “I am extremely proud of the fantastic hard work and determination of our young pupils and look forward to seeing how they take on the challenge of Silver Eco Status.”
As part of the commitment to the Eco Status, the school’s gardening club is gardening organically and is now affiliated to Duchy Originals – the Prince of Wales’ company that promotes natural products and sustainability.
Duchy Originals’ Organic Gardens for Schools project has been running for eight years and focuses on helping children understand where food comes from and the importance of vegetables in a healthy diet.
Eco-Schools is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and supported by a wide variety of partners.

The Queen’s School, Chester, Cheshire is one of the country’s leading independent schools offering the highest standard of education for girls from ages 4 – 18.
Since its foundation, The Queen’s School has always been a highly successful academic school. In the latest Government league tables published in January 2007, Queen’s was again ranked as the top girls’ school in Cheshire based on both GCSE and A/AS level results.

The school has a number of bursaries available to students. Mrs Catherine Buckley is the present headmistress of The Queen’s School. Mrs Felicity Taylor is head of the Lower School on Liverpool Road.
Past pupils include Beth Tweddle, Olympic Gymnast, Sarah Kelly founder of the UK’s Neuromuscular Centre for muscular dystrophy and Vivienne Faull, the first woman to become Dean of an English Cathedral.
