FINALISTS: Rising Star Award (under 25)
From selling electrical gadgets at 13 to developing ‘Concrete Records’ during his University years Lex Deak has continually shown his entrepreneurial flair. A part-time job at ‘Homes 4 U’, where he secured 100% mortgage on two student properties in Fallowfield, provided the finance for his partnership business in furniture importing. However, at 21 Lex decided to go solo and set up ‘Octopus’ – a business which continued importing and selling furniture but this time with super-low overheads as it was exclusively through eBay. In 2005, and aged 23 Lex was able to evolve ‘Octopus’ into ‘Sell It Shack’ – Manchester’s first eBay drop off shop (www.sellitshack.co.uk).

About Institute of Directors North West Director of the Year Awards 2006
The IoD (Institute of Directors) is a non-political independent organisation with 55,000 members. It offers a wide range of business services including business centre facilities, conferences, networking events, issues-led guides and literature as well as information services and free access to a comprehensive business library and enquiry service. The IoD places great emphasis on director development and has established a certified qualification for directors – Chartered Director – as well as running specific board-level and director-level training and individual career mentoring programmes. In addition to its wide range of business services, the IoD provides an effective voice to represent the interests of its members to government and key opinion-formers.
