Back to back winner of Best Banger

Chester Market picked up the best sausage at the Food and Drink Festival for the third year running.

Twenty judges made up of members of the public, tasted the eight Finalist sausages at the new Racecourse venue. The overall winner of Chester’s Best Sausage was, for the second year running, David Joinson, who won with his pork and blue Cheshire cheese sausage. Mr Joinson, whose sausages are on show at Chester Market, took the crown, following on from his pork and leek winner last year. He will receive his Award at Tuesday’s Gala Dinner, among a star packed audience.

Phil Salt, of Stocks Lane, Boughton, was judged second, with his country style sausage and Chris Austin, of Austin’s Butchers, Northgate Street, Chester came third with his Chester sausage.

Other finalists, which were shortlisted from more than 100 entrants during an earlier judging stage, included Noel Baker, of The Close, Blacon, with his Beef & Onion, Stuart Bebbington, of Chester Market, with his Pork and Apple, John Edge, of Handbridge, with his Lamb and Mint, David Joinson, with his Pork and leek and Phil Salt with his Thick Pork.

Organiser Carole Faulkner said: “David Joinson’s pork and Cheshire Cheese sausages are outstanding. His use of Bourne’s award winning blue Cheshire cheese creates a fantastic blend of local produce. It was great to have judges from members of the public, who were judging on taste, texture and appearance.”

Sausages made of pork, flavoured with fennel and coriander and pushed into a sheep’s bladder, date back to the Roman era and were quite possibly eaten in Chester two thousand years ago.

Notes:

The first week in November is British Sausage Week. In the last five years, sausages have gone up in value by 18 per cent. The world record for sausage eating is held by a Japanese man, who ate 58 sausages in 10 minutes. Of the 5 million people a day and 90% of households eating sausages around Britain 20,000 of them are expected at Chester Food & Drink Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend. More sausages are eaten on Saturday than any other day of the week, 44% for an evening meal rather than 18% for breakfast. The British public spend 600 million UK pounds on 266,500 tonnes of sausages a year of which there are 470 different types.
