The Theme of Love
The Theme of Love
History is steeped in love and romance. The excellent exhibitions at the Heritage Centre and the Grosvenor Museum are dedicated to this theme, along with a number of activities and venues around Chester this week.
Chester’s Heritage Centre is holding a mini exhibition about love in Chester. This includes anecdotes and myths centred around our City. Myths such the Wishing Steps. Built in 1785, legend has it that if you can run up, down and up again in one breath, your wish comes true.
Bishop Lloyd’s Palace, built in 1615 was an important building in the 17th century as well as the present day. Clearly, love was an important theme to the builders, one of the three carved panels on the front depicts Adam and Eve, the very first lovers. Abbey Gateway, in the heart of the city is the home of one of Chester’s more unusual tales of love. The Deputy Registrar had offices above Abbey Gateway, and also a lover, whom he locked in the rooms to avoid her being found by an unexpected visitor. She took fright and leapt out of the window, luckily, her full skirts acted as a parachute and all was well!
Then on to the Grosvenor Museum, where visitors are greeted with the sight of The Big Red Heart. This heart is covered with messages of love, written and stuck on by members of the public, and is in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Opposite the heart in the foyer, is another exhibition of love in a display case beautifully decorated with confetti and love hearts!
For those who still have energy for a different kind of culture, there is still the opportunity of catching a romantic film at Chester’s Odeon Cinema. Each night a different classic film is being shown. The Odeon reports that tickets are selling fast. “Ghost’ on Wednesday night was sold out, and is particularly popular with the special “lovers film deal’ of £10 for two tickets, large popcorn and drink. If you don’t manage to get a ticket, you could always pop down the road into Starbucks for a Café Verona, a romantic coffee created especially for the Festival.
There are lots of things happening in Chester at the moment, don’t just sit there, join the fun!
