Roman-tic Walk for All: Around Chester's Famous Walls; All for Charity
If the Romans were around today they would be seeing Roman(tic) Soldiers of a different kind defend their Deva fortress.
On Sunday 13th February visitors and residents braved the biting, cold weather and snow to mount the ramparts to take part in a sponsored hand-in-hand walk around the city walls as part of the City’s Festival of Romance celebrations.
The hand-in-hand walk was in aid of The British Heart Foundation and involved handcuffing couples together (paper handcuffs!) at the starting point under the Eastgate Clock to walk the 2.2 miles around the city walls. MFM 103.4’s breakfast DJs Becky Wicks and Dave Lee were also paper handcuffed together much to the amusement of the crowd.
Nicky Hughes, spokesperson for the British Heart Foundation: “More people than ever are living with heart problems in the UK, nearly 2.7 million. This Valentine’s Day, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is raising awareness of the realities of living with heart disease and is looking to raise 1 million to fund more than 30 new BHF Heart Nurses throughout the UK.
Many fundraising events are taking place during Chester’s Festival of Romance, including the Festival’s Roman-tic Walk, a great idea which enables walkers of all ages to take part and raise money for the BHF. In joining in the walk, participants will not only enjoy the views and each other”s company but they will also be looking after their own hearts by taking in more exercise. The nearest event to this is the Shell Chester Half Marathon in May but entrants to be quite fit and over 17. This walk is something for everyone – with the “feel good factor too.”
All proceeds will be going to the British Heart Foundation, charity number 225971.
The Festival of Romance is being organised on behalf of Chester City Council with support from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and Cheshire & Warrington Tourism Board.
