South of France glow to brother and sister team"s garden

Young horticulturists from an area of Chester have entered their sunflowers in the best young gardener competition which forms part of the Cheshire Year of the Gardens 08.

Charlie and Alfie Sheridan nurtured the plants from seeds and were among 11 Finalists, aged three to 10 in the Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) young flower growing competition. This year, CDHT has secured funding from Cheshire Year of the Gardens 08. Finalists applied to receive a pot and some petunia seeds at the beginning of June and Charlie, nine and Alfie, four, have been watering and tending their garden ever since.

The talented brother and sister team, of Furne Road, Blacon, have since entered their sunflowers in a special new CDHT competition to find the Best Young Gardener, for residents under 16.

Sara Morley, CDHT Neighbourhood Enterprise Coordinator, said: “This is a fantastic effort from Charlie and Alfie, who as well as growing petunias have also grown eight foot high sunflowers in their back garden. We are urging more young residents under 16 to enter the Best Young Gardener Competition. This is a great way of getting children involved in gardening; we aim to make this an annual competition.” CDHT has also secured funding from Vale Contract Services and Kiwi Nurseries, of Sealand Road, Chester. Kiwi Nurseries is offering CDHT residents and leaseholders a 10 per cent discount on any plants, hanging baskets or shrubs purchased. Residents need to take their tenancy agreement to gain the discount.

Application forms for the Best Young Gardener Competition 2008 are available from Centurion House, Northgate Street, Chester and from the Blacon office, The Parade, Blacon and the Lache office, Cliveden Road, Blacon. Forms can also be downloaded from www.cdht.net or for a form to be posted contact the Trust on 0808 1007701. Also, to enter the competition you can call Sara Morley on 0808 1007701.

The closing date for entries is Friday August 1, 2008 with winners gaining £50 in high street vouchers, a second prize of £25 and a third prize of £10. Judging will take place in the week beginning August 4, 2008.
