CDHT and Police team up to tackle crime
Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) and Cheshire Police have formed a strategic relationship to target crime in Chester. CDHT has been working with designated officers from the Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit to reduce crime in the Blacon Hall ward. The campaign is part of a long term relationship between CDHT and the Police across the whole city that combines several areas of expertise to create better communities.
John Denny, chief executive of CDHT, and Inspector Ian Thorp, responsible for Chester Outer NPU, have expressed mutual support and admiration for their ongoing action against crime.
John Denny, chief executive of CDHT, said:
“The strategic relationship is about an integrated approach. It’s a very efficient way of working. By meeting regularly and sharing information we have been able to stop potential problems before they happen. This is a pro-active way of tackling crime which gives the police more time to focus on other areas. This is just the beginning of a long partnership and we will keep progressing as we discuss new initiatives and learn from each other’s expertise.”
Inspector Ian Thorp, responsible for Chester Outer NPU, said:
“Chester & District Housing Trust has made a massive difference to the quality of life of its tenants. We are working closely with The Trust to highlight environmental and anti-social issues and to act promptly when they arise. Specially designated officers from Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit regularly meet with CDHT to exchange information and decide the best course of action to tackle crime. We have been very impressed with the outcomes. Overall, there has been a 17% reduction in crime in the Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing area. The area comprises 15 wards surrounding the City and the reduction is over a 12 month period to the end of March 2008. This achievement is the result of the Police working closely with CDHT and other members of the Crime and Disorder Partnership. We’re looking forward to continuing the positive trend.”
Pat Cullen, respect co-ordinator for CDHT, explained the strategic relationship:
“CDHT is a responsible social landlord. It’s important that we focus on the whole picture of what it means to live in a CDHT property. Our job doesn’t stop at the front gate. This means providing high quality, affordable accommodation and working with the police and local authorities to make residents feel proud of where they live. On the ground, the strategic relationship means regular meetings between CDHT, the Police and local authorities to discuss ways of reducing crime in the area. In many cases we use our standing in the community to diffuse situations before the Police intervene. On a very small number of occasions, CDHT has evicted tenants for antisocial behaviour. This is an alternative to imprisonment and is very effective as a deterrent.”
