Blooming Neighbourhood Eco-Garden
Green fingered residents in an area of Chester have had a new standpipe installed to enhance their eco-garden. In a joint initiative between Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT), Chester City Council and Blacon Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder a standpipe has been installed at the residents’ request, which will make watering the garden easier. Neighbours Kath Evans and Sharon Stokes, of Bridgeman Road, Blacon, said they are absolutely delighted with this latest improvement.
In 2003, Blacon residents were successful in their longstanding aspiration to see old garages in Bridgeman Road demolished. Driven by the determination of the residents of Bridgeman Road, there was a successful joint funding partnership bid for the Blacon Eco-Garden from the landfill tax credit scheme known as WREN (Waste Recycling and Environmental Ltd).
Over the last five years, the Blacon Eco-Garden has provided a haven of tranquility for local residents to sit, surrounded by the beauty of its shrubs and flowers and the birds, insects and animals attracted to this eco-friendly, neighbourhood garden. The Bridgeman Road Residents Association works hard to ensure that the garden is well maintained and that further improvements are made year on year.
Alison Whitehead, Community Housing Officer for CDHT, said: “The Eco Garden has been a labour of love for local residents, but having the standpipe will make looking after it so much easier. Residents will now be able to spend more time just enjoying what it has to offer.”
Cllr Reggie Jones, Cllr for Blacon Lodge Ward, added:
“The Eco garden is a place where residents can simply enjoy the peace and quiet, but it is also hard work for those residents who take responsibility for planting and watering. Kath and Sharon are remarkable people and Blacon Area Committee did not hesitate to support their request for funding for the standpipe.”
Blacon Area Committee and CDHT shared the costs of installing the standpipe and CDHT will cover the ongoing costs.
