Junior Chefs are Stars of the Future
The winners of The Junior Chef Competition have been announced in front of the crowds at the main stage of The Chester Food & Drink Festival, held at Chester Racecourse. More than 400 hundred children, aged between 6 and 16, submitted their recipes into the competition sponsored by Cheshire County Council.
Winner of the Age 16 competition was Daniel Beech, of Bishop Heber High, Malpas. Daniel said:
“I’m really please to have won in my age category, which I hear was fiercely contested. I’m a part-time chef at the moment and I’ve also got an interview coming up for The Grosvenor, in Chester. I do food at school now and I definitely want to make a career out of cooking. My chef idol is Gordon Ramsay.”
Entries were judged by The Development Chef for Pastarazzi Restaurant, Gaile Wundke. Gaile said:
“The competition has been a real success this year. Recipes like Daniel’s show that we have some cooks who really enjoy food and understand great flavours that complement each other. I was also very pleased to see that Daniel used local pork in his recipe, a practice that the Festival wholeheartedly supports. The standard of competition has been extremely high, and due to the vast numbers of entrants, the judging categories have been widened in order to reward more of these promising junior chefs. No doubt we will see some of these contestants cooking in our Young Chef competition, with some professional experience under their chef’s hats.”
