New event calls for Cheshire artists

Chester Performs is looking for artists to take part in a new, visually exciting event in Chester called Up The Wall on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November.

The event, free to attendees, will take place at twilight along the city walls. It will be a short trail that celebrates the City Walls in light, sound, theatre and performance art.

Along the way “promenaders” will come across lighting effects and projections, actors, musicians, street performers, visual and performance artists. Organisers are looking for artists to take part by contributing personal and relevant work to the route through site specific installations. In particular they are keen to hear from artists who specialise, either as professionals, students or as a hobby; in new media / digital installation, sound installation and performance / movement based art. Chester Performs is looking for groups and individuals to perform, “the exciting, unusual and bizarre”.

Contributors will have expenses paid for their presentations and there are a small number of bursaries available, which are worth £200. Interested parties should contact Amber Jones on 01244 409113 amber@chesterperforms.com

It is hoped that Up The Wall will become an annual event with European partners and artists.

Background Chester Performs is overseeing the development of the city’s new performing arts centre, which will open in 2011. Set to challenge audiences with a series of high profile performing arts events and community projects Chester Performs aims is to broaden horizons and raise the level of expectation in the performing arts both in Chester and Cheshire.

Following the closure of Chester Gateway Theatre, Chester Performs will be working with the region’s artists and communities and plans to stage work in non-traditional and outdoor spaces across the region. Cutting edge performances will take place on the streets of Chester, by the River Dee and around the Roman walls. These projects will involve street performers and aerial artists, musicians, dancers, actors, visual and sonic artists, installations and performance art.
