It's an employee's job market says The Business Connection
Alan Sugar was surprised when one of his apprentices walked out of the final selection for a £100,000 position with exceptional prospects. A growing number of employers across all sectors are seeing similar situations. Kirsty Craig, managing director of The Business Connection, Chester’s longest established recruitment agency, has seen big changes in the recruitment sector over the last 20 years. She says: “It’s now an employee’s job market out there” and is encouraging employers to realise this.
According to a recent survey “Recruitment, retention and turnover 2007’ by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the number of employers experiencing retention difficulties has climbed from 69% last year to 78%. Private sector businesses claim to be struggling more to hold on to employees than any of the other sectors (83%).
Kirsty Craig said: “The job market has many unfilled positions waiting for “the right candidate’. Candidates can pick and choose, taking the position that offers the highest salary and they are less afraid of chopping and changing from one job to another.” She continued: “The key challenge for recruitment at the moment is getting candidates to start and stay. Candidates have more choice than ever before and this has led to many becoming more motivated by “what’s in it for me’ and less concerned with what employers think of them. I have heard of candidates that don’t even turn up for the interview! Recruitment is a costly business for any company. It is not just the time and money spent on the process, but there is always a risk once “successful’ candidates start work.”
The Business Connection has listed seven important areas for employers to consider when recruiting and for an effective recruitment process (see diagram below).

In “Recruitment, retention and turnover 2007’ by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development the key reasons for organisations experiencing recruitment difficulties were a lack of necessary specialist skills (65%), followed by higher pay expectations (46%) and insufficient experience (37%). http://www.cipd.co.uk/subjects/recruitmen/general/_recruitretnt.htm
The Business Connection is a distinctly different style of recruitment agency. It has identified and reacted to the changing dynamics within the modern day employer, which demands a vibrant recruitment service. The Business Connection offers a very un-typical recruitment experience. It gets to know its candidates as well as it gets to know its clients, understanding that the better the match between a candidate’s personality and values with those of the employing company, the more fruitful the relationship is likely to be.
Whatever the size of company, whether you are a small business in need of one temporary worker or a large national Blue Chip organisation looking to outsource its recruitment, The Business Connection provides the very best staffing solutions conveniently and effectively. It wants to make a significant difference to its clients’ businesses, and its ability to retain and develop its own staff ensures a long-term partnership with its clients.
If you do something for long enough, you become an expert. During the last 18+ years The Business Connection has listened, learned and evolved into the business it is today. It is with good reason that it has become the longest established agency in Chester!
Since 1988 it has formed relationships with some clients and candidates that go back years – why? Because The Business Connection is honest and caring, which is why so many people call the agency first when they’re looking for a new job or a new employee. Not only do they enjoy working with the team at The Business Connection but they trust them too. The business has been built on solid values because it is better for all – for its clients, for its candidates and for itself. It is, the company believes, the way recruitment should be.
