Budding Stanley Kubrick wins Business Award
A filmmaker who made a documentary about homeless people in Chester has been presented with The Business Connection’s Most Enterprising Student Award at a special ceremony at The University of Chester. The Business Connection, which this year celebrated it’s 18th birthday, has sponsored the annual Award for students at The University of Chester for more than eight years and this year the Award was presented to Mercy Liao at a valedictory service at St. Thomas’ Church on Parkgate Road, Chester. International student Mercy, originally from Beijing, has recently had her documentary ‘A Long Hard Road Home’ broadcast by digital channel Propeller TV on Sky.
Mercy, of Chichester Street, Chester has a double cause for celebration as last week she visited Pinewood Studios in London, where the recent James Bond film Casino Royale was filmed, to collect a Higher Education Active Community Fund Volunteering Award for her documentary work.
Third Year student Mercy, who is a big fan of director Stanley Kubrick, is studying for a BA (HONS) in Religious Studies at The University of Chester and plans to continue her studies towards an MA in TV Production with an aim of directing television in the North West.
Managing Director of The Business Connection Kirsty Craig said:
"Mercy is remarkable and a real inspiration to people of her generation. She is one of the most worthy recipients in the history of our Award and I was very happy to present her with it. The Business Connection’s annual Awards celebrate outstanding achievement at The University of Chester and we consider our relationship with the University to be extremely worthwhile."
Maria Skinner, volunteer coordinator at The University of Chester, who put Mercy’s name forward for The Business Connection Award, said:
"Mercy has made an outstanding contribution to life at Chester University. She has made two further films which are now being used in educational workshops for the service users at Chester Aid To the Homeless. Mercy is a talented filmmaker who highlighted issues facing homeless people in Chester and we wish her all the best for her projects in the future."
Music composer Mercy, 21, who also works part-time at a jewellery store in Chester, said:
"I was so excited to receive The Business Connection Award. I have always wanted to make films and it is great to have my work recognised. I made two documentaries set in Chester about people who live on the streets. How they became homeless and how they really felt. My films are about social issues and I raised the funding for them myself. I was looking out for James Bond when I went to Pinewood Studios but filming was completed. In the Summer I will be undertaking four weeks work experience with the BBC. The Business Connection Award has really kick-started my career."
