THE BADGER 'DIGS UP' SOME TIPS FOR THE NORTH WEST'S ASPIRING BUSINESS LEADERS

Some of the North West’s top aspiring business leaders learnt what it was like to face Sir Alan Sugar across a boardroom table, as runner-up of popular TV programme, The Apprentice, Ruth Badger, shared some of her experiences from the show at the latest Institute of Directors’ North West Young Directors’ Forum event.

Ruth, who shot to fame after competing in the BBC2 show, spoke to an audience made-up of some of the region’s most aspiring and ambitious business leaders. Not shy to share her opinions, Ruth spoke enthusiastically about her experiences on the show, as well as starting her own consultancy business.

Ruth said: “It was fantastic to see so many motivated and enthusiastic business people in one room. There were some very inspiring stories and I was glad to share my experiences with such an entrepreneurial crowd.”

Her business skills developed early. She revealed: “At 6 years old I took my 50p pocket money to the stationery shop to buy rubbers at 10p I’d sell at school for £1. Then I’d take my money every week to the bank. At 13 it was jumpers.” Ruth added: “With The Apprentice I went from a £22 million P&L responsibility to selling apples and pears. I loved it.” She is still in touch with Sir Alan and would always have started her own company at some stage. In 10 years time she aims; “To be in Manchester, have a consortium of businesses, a property portfolio and to be happy.”

Chair of the Institute of Directors’ North West Young Directors’ Forum group Dr Moneeb Awan, a successful business leader himself, added: “The IoD Young Directors’ Forum is all about encouraging younger aspiring entrepreneurial talent. We exist to support those in the region who are perhaps new to a leadership role by offering innovative networking opportunities, alongside proven personal development programmes. It was great to have Ruth along to speak at this event as, in many ways, she epitomises our membership demonstrating drive, enthusiasm and ambition.”

“We are always looking for new members who want to be part of the YDF and it is vital people in the region understand there is a support and development facility available to them through the IoD. The North West is in an enviable position with so much talent among new and emerging leaders and it is vital this is supported, nurtured and developed.”
