IoD Cheshire breakfast with former Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year
The Cheshire branch of the Institute of Directors is holding another event in their popular breakfast networking and business presentation series at Rowton Hall Hotel, Chester on 14th June. Speaker Dawn Gibbins MBE is Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year 2003 and founder and chairman of Flowcrete, a world leader in specialist flooring.
Dawn started Flowcrete with her father in 1982 to develop new concepts in flooring from a factory in Sandbach, Cheshire. When her traditional industrial market began to dry up, she not only followed industry to the Far East but also led her company into new commercial and public sectors. She was awarded the MBE for services to industry in 1994, the youngest industrialist ever to be given such a prestigious award and is an ambassador for the DTI’s Manufacturing Advisory Service. Today Flowcrete employs 200 people and manufactures in 8 factories across the world, with 26 offices world-wide and a turnover of £26 million.

Dawn Gibbins MBE has a very distinctive leadership style which can be summed up as ‘dare to be different’. She boils it down to five golden rules for leadership: Dream (and share the vision with the team); Dare (get out there, get any help going, but stand out from the crowd); Discover (her technology has already won four DTI Smart awards); Develop and Do it! She believes ‘leaders must be visionary, enthusiastic champions of change’. Underlying that is a firm and unambiguous knowledge of your own capabilities. She tests herself psychometrically and tends to employ people who complement her qualities and puts complete faith in them. She regrets only one thing: not learning to delegate sooner. She realises balance in life makes for better work and that work must also be fun: “Laughter is the greatest stress reliever of all”.
