Fish makes you clever! Junior Chef Competition winners
The winners of the Junior Chef Competition were announced from more than 250 entrants. Pupils in schools across Cheshire submitted recipes for the Competition using local produce. The pupils had to put down their method, cook the meal and draw a picture of it.
The winners had their photo taken with celebrity chef Lesley Waters, who offered them words of encouragement to become chefs in the future.
The winner of the under 11 age group competition was Jonathan Barnes, aged seven, of Christleton Primary School, who cooked plaice, apple, mashed potato, milk, butter and salt with melted cheese. The under 11 runner up was William Wilkes, 10, of Peover Primary School, who cooked turkey steaks, paprika, rice and vegetables.
Jonathan said: “Fish makes you clever.”
Abigail Kay, 13, of Verdin High School, Winsford, was the under16 age group winner, who cooked chicken, mushroom and cream sauce. James Heywood, of Melbalk Primary School, was under 16 runner up.
Abigail said: “I really enjoyed this competition. I would like to be a celebrity chef.”
Stephen Wundke, chairman of the Chester Food & Drink Festival, said: “This competition is all about getting schools cooking more healthy food again and about finding young stars of the future passionate about great food. It’s about a food revolution in Cheshire which, supported by Cheshire County Council, can encourage our young people to enjoy great, locally sourced and cooked food.”
