The Shell Valentine Cards Exhibition, Chester Visitor Centre, Vicars Lane, Chester
A ?not to be missed? opportunity to see this historic collection of Valentine cards from the Shell Advertising Art Collection on loan from the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.
In 1938 Shell had the innovative idea of sending Valentine greetings to lady customers. The cards were never an advertisement for the company, nor revealed the identity of the sender. They were designed by artists of the day and carried jokes and rhymes on motoring and petrol themes. The exhibition also details the history of the Valentine from the early 19th century. Whether your taste is romance, sentiment and the liberal use of satin ribbon and gilt cupids, or satirical cartoons, cruel verse, bitterness and the disenchantment of loves lost, you will find it all here in the Collection. For more information please call 01244 402445

Brief Encounter
