The Queen's Art Show
Staff and pupils at The Queen’s School, Chester, are currently enjoying the creative efforts of Year 11,12,13 in their GCSE and AS/A level art exhibition. The show is the culmination of many hours of hard work, with each pupil developing imaginative ideas and exploring her artistic potential.
Parents, governors and friends of the School were invited to two private views of the students’ work recently. The visitors were extremely impressed by the quality and originality of the art pieces on show and a number of students sold their work to an appreciative audience.
Art coursework accounts for 60 per cent of the final examination grade, with the remaining points awarded for work produced in a timed exam. The exhibition shows how students researched and developed their thoughts, exploring different themes and materials in order to create their stunning pieces.
The school’s Head of Art, Alistair Tucker, said: “Art is a very enjoyable subject, but it requires a lot of dedication and commitment to create a body of work that can achieve a good grade. The girls have worked extremely hard and produced work of a very high standard.”
In order to fire their imagination, the girls were taken to London to the Tate Modern, Tate Britain and Royal Academy. Here they were inspired by work created by contemporary artists, as well as the work of artists from centuries gone by.
Zahra Taleifeh, a student on the AS course who wants to study architecture at University after finishing her A Levels, said: “I have really enjoyed the structure of AS Art. It has given me the opportunity to develop my ideas and the chance to explore new techniques and materials in much more depth than at GCSE. I’m really looking forward to next years A Level course and the opportunity for more independent study.”
Students were encouraged to use a variety of media including drypoint, collagraphs, lino, monotype, drawing, painting, photography and textiles. They found their inspiration for subject matter in the world around them, exploring topics such as freedom, wraps, structures, surfaces and transposition.

Established by a group of prominent Chester citizens in 1878 as the Chester School for Girls, the school was renamed four years later by command of Queen Victoria and is proud to remain the only school in the country to have been granted the name The Queen’s School by royal decree. The school has a number of bursaries available to students. Mrs Catherine Buckley is the present headmistress of The Queen’s School. Mrs Felicity Taylor is head of the Lower School on Liverpool Road.
Past pupils include Beth Tweddle, Olympic Gymnast, Sarah Kelly founder of the UK’s Neuromuscular Centre for muscular dystrophy and Vivienne Faull, the first woman to become Dean of an English Cathedral.
