Eat Well Award Initiative at Food & Drink Festival Local Restaurant First with Spring Menu
Councillor Mia Jones, portfolio holder for Health and Well Being is spearheading a campaign to raise awareness in Chester about healthy eating. Chester City Council’s Food Safety team will visit restaurants, school and work canteens to highlight the advantages of applying for The Eat Well Award which will be officially launched at the Chester Food and Drink Festival in April.
Promoting the new award, Councillor Mia Jones says; “The award recognises the high standard of hygiene, smoke free provisions and the availability of healthy options on the menu. The level of obesity in young people is very worrying. Being able to choose healthier options in school and work canteens as well as when we go out for a meal socially can make a difference in battling some of the health issues associated with the foods we eat.
Kathy Miller who owns the Calveley Arms is keen to be considered for the Eat Well Award. In January the new owner of the popular pub in the picturesque village of Handley, near Tattenhall introduced a complete no smoking policy ahead of government legislation next year. Mrs Miller and Head Chef Anthony Cadman have created a Spring menu packed with healthy dishes made with the freshest local produce.
Mrs Miller welcomes the chance to apply for the Eat Well Award and says, “Our no smoking policy has been a tremendous success and our customers tell us they really appreciate the difference. Our new menu offers diners wholesome freshly cooked dishes as well as lighter, healthier choices including fresh fish supplied by Bricklands of Hoole. We also source our fresh ingredients from local suppliers.”
Mark Green, Food Safety Manager at Chester City Council added; “This new Award is aimed at catering businesses in the area and has three main criteria – good hygiene standards, healthy menu options and the provision of smoke free or no smoking areas.”
The Food Safety Team will be on hand at the Chester Food and Drink Festival 2006 on stand 11 to speak to visitors about the award.
