Gardening Competition Blossoms for 2008
Green fingered residents at Chester’s largest housing association are being asked to take part in their annual gardening competition.
As gardens are beginning to bloom, Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) is announcing to their residents that their second Garden Competition is under way. Last year, there were more than 70 entries in the first ever competition and the standard was extremely high. Continuing the garden theme, CDHT has also held its first gardening day of the year at ChesterCare Office, Kingfisher Court, Northgate Avenue, Chester, where employees worked with residents to improve their gardens.
First, second and third prizes for Garden Competition 2008 winners will be awarded in each of CDHT’s six neighbourhoods. There will also be a Best Sheltered Scheme and Best Balcony/window Box award. A special award for the Best Young Gardener, for residents under 16 will also be presented.
There is a new category this year, for children under 11 years of age to grow the best petunia. Children need to collect the petunias in their pots then water them and watch them grow. There will be prizes for all children that enter and a special prize for the best one grown.
Organiser Sara Morley, CDHT Neighbourhood Enterprise Coordinator, said:
“We look forward to seeing residents’ beautiful gardens in the summer and a big thank you to everyone involved. We are particularly encouraging children to enter the petunia competition this year. Good luck to all entrants with the competition. We particularly want to thank everyone involved with the recent gardening days. It is rewarding helping residents with their gardens, seeing the fruits of everyone’s labours and I would encourage more people to take part.”
This year, CDHT has secured funding from Cheshire Year of Gardens 08 and also sponsorship from Vale Contract Services and Kiwi Nurseries, of Sealand Road, Chester. Kiwi Nurseries is offering CDHT residents and leaseholders a 10 per cent discount on any plants, hanging baskets or shrubs purchased. Residents need to take their tenancy agreement to gain the discount.
The overall winner of the Garden Competition 2008 will receive a prize of £100, with an overall second prize of £50 and an overall third prize of £25. There will be a first prize of £50 for each of the six neighbourhoods, with a second prize of £25 and a third prize of £10.

Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) was created in November 2000 to acquire the housing stock of Chester District Council and now owns and manages over 6,200 properties in and around Chester, employing 285 staff. The Trust’s homes fall in to six neighbourhoods – Blacon North; Blacon South; Chester City Area; The Rurals; Lache and Handbridge; Upton, Hoole, Newton and Plas Newton.
CDHT provides a range of services to tenants and residents in Chester and surrounding areas. These include ChesterCare, a telecare alarm service for CDHT tenants, other association tenants and private customers and the management of the specially designated Community Intervention Budget. This improves facilities and allows changes, which are felt by tenants to be vital to their community. CDHT also manages the housing waiting list and homelessness agency service on behalf of Chester City Council.
Current projects for CDHT include the £12million regeneration of the Treborth Road area of Chester, to include 200 new homes for rent, sale and shared ownership, as well as a village green and wildlife habitats.
